A Grammy award-winning American pop singer, occasional actress, dancer, author and executive producer all rolled into one – that’s the best way to describe Britney Jean Spears, who was born on December 2, 1981. The music videos, studio albums and pop songs like "...Baby One More Time" and "Toxic" along with her extremely publicized personal life have made Spears very famous.

Spears took part in an open audition at the age of eight for cast members for a new incarnation of The Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney channel, but she was not selected in spite of her bubbly personality as she was deemed to be too young. Undaunted by this rejection she started appearing in some off-Broadway plays and television commercials. She played an evil young girl in a Broadway play, Ruthless in 1991. She studied for three summers in New York, where she stayed temporarily with her mother and younger sister, at the prestigious Professional Performing Arts School. She had also won recognition on Star Search.

At the age of 11, Spears gained a foothold in The Mickey Mouse Club, which was filmed in Orlando, Florida. She remained a cast member for two seasons, from 1992 to 1993. Justin Timberlake and Joshua "JC" Chasez, who later became part of the heartthrob band N'Sync; singer Christina Aguilera; actor Keri Russell of Felicity; actor Ryan Gosling of Young Hercules; and Nita Booth, who was crowned Miss Virginia 1998 were the other Musketeers at that time.

Her major chance came up in June of 1997 when entertainment attorney Larry Rudolph was contacted by her father. An audition was arranged specially for her at Jive Records. Thus at the age of 15, Spears was signed to a contract and sent to Sweden to work with writer-producer Max Martin, who was instrumental in creating hits for the Backstreet Boys and Ace of Base. Spears suggested a naughty schoolgirl motif instead of the animated superhero theme suggested by Jive for her video. This proved to be very popular and has still not lost its appeal.

Britney Spears was married to backup dancer Kevin Federline in September 2004 and immediately after the wedding expressed her desire to get pregnant. She had confirmed the rumors that they were now expecting their first child together and that everything was fine with her. She had expressed her gratitude to all those who had prayed for her and the following year she gave birth to her son, Sean Preston Federline.

Her tremendous success as a singer landed her with major high-profile advertising deals in 2000, especially for Pepsi. She also penetrated into other forms of media, including film and reality television. During this period, her third and fourth albums, which had artistic inputs from her, were released but their sales were not very satisfactory.

Spears ventured into the field of restaurants with the opening of her Southern-tinged restaurant, Nyla, in New York City on June 27, 2002. This restaurant features a Cajun-inspired menu and is named after the two most favorite places of Spears in the world, New York and Louisiana.

Her fourth album was released in 2003, in which she has moved away from her teen-pop past with cutting-edge dance, techno and reggae inspired tracks. Spears made out with Madonna at the MTV Video Music Awards at the end of 2003 and married Jason Alexander in January 2004. This marriage ended after two days, a record of sorts! All these events made her the subject of headlines for quite some time.

She is planning to resume her recording career in 2006, and with her records selling more than the 85 million mark till 2006, Britney Spears is one of the most famous celebrities and the hottest sex symbol of her generation.
